Domino Reading Order (X-Men)

Black Cat is not the only Marvel character with lucky-based powers. While Felicia Hardy brings bad luck to those around her, the woman known as Domino shifts the odds in her favor. A member of the X-Men family, Domino often worked as a mercenary, taking on questionable jobs but still guided by a moral compass that pushes her to do the right thing when necessary.

Created by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld, Domino first “appeared” in New Mutants #98. However, it was later revealed that this was an imposter, with her real first appearance taking place in X-Force #8. You know the World of Comics, it’s complicated!

While she was often called “Beatrice” (a name meaning lucky) at first, Domino’s real name was revealed to be Neena Thurman. She became one of the most emblematic members of the X-Force team, a long-time ally to the time-traveling mutant Cable and one of Deadpool’s closest friends. Domino is also visually striking, with her pure-white skin and distinctive black eye patch. As Rob Liefield explained in a Comics Beat interview: “I was obsessed with the game dominoes. And I always thought that a character who was 100% black and white would be a tremendous visual.” He also gave her luck powers, because “when you play dominoes, it’s a game of chance.”

What do we really know about Domino? Marvel’s luckiest mutant finally headlined her own 3-issue comic limited series, exploring part of her past in a story by writer Ben Raab and artist David Perrin. She then returns to X-Force, where she teams up with Moonstar. However, Domino is absent from the comic between issues #101 and #105, making her comeback in issue #106.

Domino in the 2000s

X-Force became quite a different team for a time and was even renamed X-Statix! Domino wasn’t part of this particular team and even showed up in X-Force #117 to crash their press conference. We heartily recommend reading this great series by Peter Milligan. On her side, Domino chose to go solo for a time, with her second limited series exploring, once again, part of her mysterious past, before reconnecting with Cable, as an ally or an antagonist.

This period concludes with Domino being recruited in Punisher War Journal (2007) #13 to hunt down Frank Castle, with the storyline wrapping up in issues #20-23–collected in Punisher War Journal Vol. 4: Jigsaw.

Domino Returns to X-Force (2008-2013)

After the event of Messiah Complex, a new X-Force comic series written by Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost and drawn by Clayton Crain started. His mission. Do the things the X-Men cannot. The team was assembled by Cyclops with Wolverine as their leader. Domino is a late addition, joining them in issue #8.

Domino of Earth-11326! An alternate version of Domino appears in the crossover event Age of X, set “in a world where the X-Men never existed and mutantkind has been hunted to extinction.” The story has been collected in X-Men Milestones: Age of X.

The world of X-Men is split in two with Schism, a 2011 comic event opposing Cyclops and Wolverine in which Domino only makes a cameo. In the aftermath of this conflict, the X-Men are reorganized during the Regenesis event, with Marvel’s luckiest mutant on Cyclops’ side and part of the security Recon Team on Utopia, with Jubilee, Warpath and Psylocke:

and leading us to a new status quo

This period ends with the crossover event Avengers vs. X-Men, during which Domino makes several appearances (though none are major).

Domino during Marvel Now (2013-2015)

Marvel Now was a short-lived 2013 relaunch that followed the end of Avengers vs. X-Men. In this new status quo, Domino rejoined Nathan Summers as part of X-Force, alongside Forge, Colossus, and Dr. Nemesis. The team took on “threats no one else could know about”, even if it meant becoming public enemy number one. During this period, Domino grew closer to Colossus.

Domino, Agent of AIM! Under writer Nathan Edmondson, Domino finds herself working for A.I.M, making a short appearance in Punisher (Vol. 10) #4 & #6 and playing a more prominent role in Deathlok (Vol. 5):

All-New All-Different Domino (2016-2018)

Following Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars, the Marvel Universe was rebooted and our luckiest mutant just created the second incarnation of Mercs for Money, going toes to toes with Deadpool, before becoming a target for the resurfaced Weapon X!

Domino in Marvel Fresh Start (2018-2019)

As Weapon X continued in the Fresh Start era, Domino made her big-screen debut in Deadpool 2. This led Marvel to offer her first ongoing title from Gail Simone and David Baldeón, followed by the comic book miniseries Hotshots from the same team.

Domino in Krakoa (2019-2024)

A new dawn for the X-Men! “With the newly-founded island nation of Krakoa opening up limitless possibilities and empowering mutantkind at last, humans grapple uncomfortably with the new world order — and the X-Men must defend what they have built!” While the landscape has changed, danger remains, and X-Force is still essential in this new era. Domino joins Benjamin Percy’s X-Force team alongside Beast, Jean Grey, Sage, Wolverine, and Kid Omega, though she doesn’t receive much spotlight.

Next… From The Ashes! Following the end of the Krakoa Age, the X-Men titles were relaunched. Domino doesn’t join the new iteration of X-Force this time around, but works as a head of security for mutant pop star Alison Blaire in Dazzler! More Coming Soon!
