Green Lantern Rebirth Reading Order

  • by

After almost five years, the New 52 era came to an end to make way for a new era, a new beginning: Rebirth! It had, from a continuity point of view, minimal impact on the Green Lanterns, as their story simply continues from the previous era.

From a more behind-the-scene angle, new creative teams worked on the title. Or titles should I write, as the main Green Lantern series was replaced by two books. Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz headlined Green Lanterns, written by Sam Humphries for its first 32 issues and for the most part penciled by Robson Rocha. Humphries was followed by Tim Seeley (#33-47), Aaron Gillespie (#48-49), and Dan Jurgens (#50-57) with art from Ronan Cliquet, Carlo Barberi, V. Ken Marion, Mike Perkins and Marco Santucci. Our two Green Lanterns were also members of the Justice League during this period. At the same time, Hal Jordan was still flying with writer Robert Venditti and artist Rafa Sandoval in Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps

Things changed not long after Dark Nights: Metal. Grant Morrison took over and teamed up with British comic book artist Liam Sharp for a run on Green Lantern. There was also some shake-up in the Justice League, following the No Justice arc, with the creation of different teams. Simon Baz stayed with the classic Justice League, but Jessica Crews joined the Justice League Odyssey, a team formed to bring order to the newly created space sector known as the Ghost Sector. And a little bit later, a new Green Lantern was introduced…

Before Green Lantern Rebirth

Rebirth marks the beginning of a new era, but for those who want to explore the past, we invite you to check out those reading orders:

Green Lantern Rebirth Reading Order:

As a new era started for the Green Lanterns with Rebirth, their stories were told in two books. As the title indicates, Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps serves as a continuation of the previous series (Green Lantern, Sinestro, and the Green Lantern Corps) and follows Hal Jordan who needs to find and restore the Corps who had vanished and had been replaced by the Sinestro Corps. It’s a title full of Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, John Stewart, and Kyle Rayner. Concurrently, Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz protect the Earth in Green Lanterns.

Justice LeagueOptional. Earth-based Lanterns Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz joins the Justice League to live more adventures. They are supporting characters in those stories.  You can read the first 31 issues concurrently to Green Lanterns, or just together. We invite you to stop after issue 31, as the even Dark Knights: Metal takes place at this stage (see below). Also,

Dark Nights Metal Icon Reading Order

Dark Nights: Metal! This Batman Event written by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo introduced the Dark Multiverse and this triggers events that will change the DC Universe. Members of the Justice League play a role in this event (except for some ties-in in The Resistance part) and this story will shape what’s to come for the team. For more information, check out our Dark Nights: Metal reading order (with an issue-by-issue order).

  • Dark Nights: Metal
Collects Dark Nights: Metal #1-6, and Dark Knights Rising: The Wild Hunt #1 and Batman Lost #1.
  • Batman The Dawnbreaker (tie-in connected to Green Lantern)
Collected in Dark Nights: Metal: Dark Knights Rising
  • Dark Nights: Metal: The Resistance
Collects “Gotham Resistance” (Teen Titans #12, Nightwing #29, Suicide Squad #26, Green Arrow #32) and “Bats Out Of Hell” (The Flash #33, Justice League #32-33, Hal Jordan and The Green Lantern Corps #32), plus Batman Lost #1 and Hawkman Found #1.

Justice LeagueJL Notes: You can read together Justice League Vol. 6 and Justice League Vol. 7, by Christopher Priest and published after Metal but sort of disconnected from those events.

Green Lanterns in the DC Universe! DC decided to get rid of the Rebirth banner and just goes with DC Universe, which is simply a continuation of Rebirth. Though without any interruption or continuity changes, there is some reorganization on the Justice League front, as Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV became the creative force behind the title, building their epic tale to lead us to Dark Nights: Death Metal.

What does it mean for our Lanterns? Following the events in No Justice,  John Stewart joined the classic Justice League, whereas Jessica Cruz became the leader of the Justice League Odyssey written by Joshua Williamson.

Taking the place of the two Green Lanterns series is the new The Green Lantern by Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp. The series began with Green Lantern Hal Jordan encountering an alien hiding in plain sight. It sets off a chain of events that rocks the Green Lantern Corps to its foundations.

Meet the new Green Lantern Sojourner Mullein created by N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell. First presented as a non-canon story, Far Sector is now considered part of the main continuity and she’s also appeared in Future State.

After Green Lantern: Rebirth: Infinite Frontier

After the Future State Event came the new relaunch named Infinite Frontier and a new Green Lantern title, with Geoffrey Thorneon writing duties. As this new Green Lantern series begins, the newly formed United Planets and the Guardians of the Universe hold an intergalactic summit to decide who can best serve and protect the cosmos from danger. With the majority of Green Lanterns called back to Oa, John Stewart arrives alongside Teen Lantern Keli Quintela, whose powerful gauntlet could be one of the most powerful and unstable weapons in the universe. With the entire landscape of the universe in flux, is this the end of the Green Lantern Corps…or a new beginning?

Don’t forget! A new Crisis is happening at some point in the DC Universe. Check out our Dark Crisis reading order to know more about it!
