Old Man Logan Reading Order

In Marvel Comics, Wolverine is one of the most popular characters. So much that there is more than one! We are not speaking about X-23, maybe the most famous Wolverine after the Original, but about Old Man Logan today. But be careful as there are actually three versions of the older and grimmer Logan!

The original Old Man Logan made his first appearance in Fantastic Four (1998) #558 before appearing in Wolverine #66. Created by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, he lives in a dystopian future where the villains won — Earth-807128, aka the Wastelands timeline. He is mostly the star of a famous storyline and made a few other appearances.

Another version of the character was introduced in Secret Wars and found its way into Marvel’s main continuity after his Earth-shattering events. If you thought that the two characters were the same Old Man Logan, nobody could blame you! It was first suggested as such, with the character blending elements from the original dystopian story with elements from 616 Wolverine. It was later explained that this version was this was another Old Man Logan. And, let’s not forget that an alternate version of the second Old Man Logan was introduced in Edge of Venomverse #4.

Today, we’re taking a closer look at both versions of Old Man Logan—to avoid any confusion—starting with the story that began it all, then moving on to the second Old Man Logan’s many adventures across the Marvel Universe.

The Original Old Man Logan Reading Order

The Original Old Man Logan was created by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. Living in an alternate future universe in which the supervillains overthrew the superheroes (now known as Earth-807128), he has abandoned his Wolverine persona to settle down and take care of his family. Years later, he is forced to help an old friend, Old Man Hawkeye, to assure his family’s safety.

This is a self-contained story that Marvel will reprint this year in their Marvel Premier Collection:

This story can also be found in the classic trade paperback collection Wolverine: Old Man Logan as well as in the Wolverine by Mark Millar Omnibus.

While published many years later, Wastelanders: Wolverine is picking up not long after the end of the original Old Man Logan limited series and look at what the future holds for him

Around the same time as the Old Man Logan limited series, Mark Millar was also writing the Fantastic Four (with art by Bryan Hitch) and introduces the New Defenders, a team coming from the distant future led by Sue Storm and including a man known as the Hooded Man!

When a team of Wolverines from across the Multiverse is assembled to take on a foe under Christos Gage’s supervision, the Original Old Man Logan is part of the team and this is, to this date, his most recent appearances in the Marvel Universe.

Wolverine LogoYour Guide to Old Man Logan Comics, Post Secret Wars!

Originally presented as the same as his Earth-807128 counterpart, it was later established that the Old Man Logan introduced in Secret Wars was from a different reality. To be specific, from Earth-21923. Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Andrea Sorrentino, this other Old Man Logan is way older than Prime Wolverine and his own history plays a little differently than the original Old Man Logan. When the Multiverse was destroyed and reborn in the form of Battleword, this Old Man Logan found himself in the Wastelands, a recreation of his reality.

When the dust settled–or simply, a new Marvel Universe was born–, he woke up in the new Prime Marvel Universe, starring in his own comic title by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino. He also joined Storm’s team in Extraordinary X-Men also written by Lemire with art from Humberto Ramos.
