Spider-Man starts here! The X-Men weren’t the only ones going adjectiveless in the nineties! This was also the case with Spider-Man, thanks to Todd McFarlane. The creator became a comic book star because of his work on The Amazing Spider-Man. As he became increasingly unhappy with the lack of control over his work and wanted to write his own stories, Marvel Comics gave him his own Spidey title to please him. He left the title after having worked on 15 issues.

Spider-Man, A New Era (1997-2018)

For more information and details of other editions, see our Spider-Man by J. Michael Straczynski and The Amazing Spider-Man by Dan Slott Reading Orders. The World of Marvel Comics was put upside down after the Onslaught Saga, leading to the disappearance of many superheroes including the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. the Marvel Universe entered a new and short era: Heroes Reborn! Titles were canceled and heroes were… reborn with the help of the Image Comics founder. The result was not successful… When our superheroes made their return to the Marvel Universe, the publisher seized the occasion to relaunch all their main ongoing title, including The Amazing Spider-Man (1999)! Marvel resumed the legacy numbering with issue #500.

For Spider-Man, things picked up with the arrival of writer J. Michael Straczynski, whose run explored the mystical origins of Peter Parker’s powers and helped redefine the character for the modern age. Unfortunately, it concluded with one of the most criticized Spider-Man stories of all time: One More Day! Also, the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man title was launched during that run, primarily written by Peter David.

After the controversial One More Day event, the world of Spider-Man was rebooted and restructured. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and The Sensational Spider-Man comics were canceled, and The Amazing Spider-Man became a thrice-monthly publication with different creative teams assigned to various storylines.

Writer Dan Slott was one of the writers working on Spider-Man at the time, and he became the sole writer for the title starting with The Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #648 and the beginning of the Big Time storyline. While Dan Slott’s eight-year run on Spider-Man has been reprinted in various collections, Marvel Comics hasn’t covered most of those years in Omnibus format. Spider-Man: Back to the Basics (2018-)

It is often said that Marvel Comics doesn’t want to let Peter Parker grow up! So, each time the character finds himself going beyond his classic status quo, everything will be destroyed in order to put the character back where he started. When Marvel relaunched in 2018 under the Fresh Start banner, it was, once again, a back to the basics for Spider-Man under Nick Spencer’s run. It all starts with an alien invasion, a troublesome doppelganger, and a shocking new roommate: the villainous Boomerang! Spidey rekindles an old romance and combats his classic rogue galleries. And it’s only the beginning.

Many Spidey adventures from this period haven’t been collected in omnibus yet, from Zeb Wells’s run to the Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man or Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man series.
