X-Men Omnibus Reading Order!

  • by

From their first appearance in September 1963 to the present, The X-Men have lived countless adventures filled with action, tragedy, comedy, romance, and more. These adventures have spawned many teams such as New Mutants, X-Factor, Excalibur, and X-Force, as well as solo journeys for many characters in the form of miniseries and ongoing titles!

Naturally, the library of X-Men and X-Men-related comic book titles can look daunting for new readers and even older ones. Throughout the years, Marvel Comics has collected many runs and tens of thousands of X-Men issues in various formats, including classic trade paperbacks, Marvel Masterworks, in the popular Epic Collection, and, of course, the Omnibus line!

With more than 50 omnibuses dedicated to the X-Men and all associated titles—and the number is still growing—, we have decided to create a Specific X-Men Omnibus Reading Order. This guide can serve as a roadmap to the extraordinary adventures of the X-Men in this particular collection, helping new and old readers to find their ways in the vast world of the mutantkind!

X-Men, The Omnibus Collection

Note: Some storylines not collected in an omnibus are indicated in this listing in bold and italics (ex: X-Men: X-Cutioner’s Song), mostly in order to give some markers to where we are in the X-Men stories, or to point some important part that are missing from the Omni Collection at this date. Also, there are few omnibuses for the last ten years, so we invite you to dive into our big reading order for more information.

X-Men: Grand Design

Released in 2018-2019, X-Men Grand Design is a comic book series created by Ed Piskor which recap four decades of X-Men, from 1963 to the late 1980s (up to X-tinction Agenda). While it’s not the same as reading those stories, this is an interesting way to dive into the X-Men history and put into perspective everything that happened to the X-Men during that period.

  • X-Men: Grand Design Trilogy
    Collects X-Men: Grand Design (2017) #1-2, X-Men: Grand Design – Second Genesis (2018) #1-2, X-Men: Grand Design – X-Tinction (2019) #1-2.

X-Men Reading Order

X-Men Silver Age Omnibus (1963-74)

For other editions, see our The Silver Age X-Men Reading Order. The X-Men team was created by the creative duo of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1963, composed of Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel, and Iceman. Schooled by Charles Xavier to teach them how to master their powers, they also fought against Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants featuring Mastermind, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Toad. Due to low sales, the title was cancelled in 1970. This part is collected in two omnibuses:

Written and penciled by John Byrne between 1990 and 2001, X-Men: The Hidden Years was created to fill the gap between issues #66 and #93, when only reprints were published. It lasted only 22 issues.

  • X-Men: The Hidden Years Omnibus
    Collects X-Men: The Hidden Years (1999) #1-22, Fantastic Four (1961) #102-104; material from X-Men (1991) #94, Amazing Adult Fantasy (1961) #14.

Finally, let’s point out that the X-Men made several guest stars appearances between the conclusion of their title and the relaunch. For the moment, none of those stories have been collected in an omnibus format (or another hardcover edition but they are reprinted in the X-Men Epic Collection: It’s Always Darkest Before the Dawn.

X-Men Reading Order

Chris Claremont’s X-Men Omnibus (1975-1991)

For other editions, see our Chris Claremont X-Men Reading Order. In 1975, The X-Men were revived under writer Chris Claremont who made the team one of Marvel’s most successful franchises and also created one of the most influential runs for the mutants. A new team is introduced in Giant-Size X-Men #1 (1975), filled with more diverse characters. The group was led by Cyclops, from the original team and consisted of the newly created Colossus (from the Soviet Union/Russia), Nightcrawler (from West Germany/Germany), Storm (from Kenya), and Thunderbird (a Native American of Apache descent), and three previously introduced characters: Banshee (from Ireland), Sunfire (from Japan), and Wolverine (from Canada). Wolverine became the breakout character of this period and would even go on to have his own solo title.

During this era, Claremont wrote many iconic and important X-Men stories, such as The Dark Phoenix Saga, Days of Future Past, X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills. Several new characters and teams were introduced including Alpha Flight, The New Mutants, X-Factor, Excalibur

In 1986, Marvel launched Classic X-Men, a series that reprinted the previous stories with a twist! They fleshed out the 1970s tales and delved deeper into the characters’ lives, and new story pages were even inserted into the reprints, expanding on key moments and sowing the seeds for future storylines! This material is collected in an omnibus – with comparisons and text articles explaining what was changed, what was added, and why! It’s the perfect companion piece to your Uncanny X-Men collection!

  • X-Men Classic Omnibus (1986-1991)

The start of X-Factor and the Mutant Massacre! The original X-Men are reunited as X-Factor! Launched in 1986 by Bob Layton and Jackson Guice, this new X-Men spin-off starred the five original X-Men – Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Jean Grey (Marvel Girl), and Iceman – after they disassociated with the current team because Professor X had placed Magneto as its leader.

Not long after, Marvel Comics delivered its first X-Men crossover, Mutant Massacre. It was an unexpected success that helped the X-Men title sales and prompted Marvel’s policy of holding mutant crossovers annually. The Story? The Morlocks: a community of mutant outcasts living beneath the streets of Manhattan. The Marauders: professional mutant assassins, employed by a mysterious evil to wipe the Morlocks out! Between the two stand some of Marvel’s most heroic: the X-Men, X-Factor, the New Mutants, Power Pack, Daredevil, and the Mighty Thor!

X-Men Reading Order

The 90s X-Men

For other editions, see our ’90s X-Men Reading Order. After Claremont’s run, the X-Men were divided into two color-coded squads. The Blue team headlined what we called the adjectiveless X-Men title. Under the leadership of Cyclops, the team consisting of Wolverine, Beast, Psyloch, Rogue, Gambit, and later Jubilee and Kwannon, goes on several missions such as confronting Magento and Asteroid M, battling Omega Red, helping Ghost Rider against the Brodd and other classic threats such as Mister Sinister, Sabretooth, Spiral or Mojo.

The adventures of the Gold Team started in Uncanny X-Men 281, with Storm as their lead. She brought together Archangel, Colossus, Jean Grey, Iceman, and the group was later joined by Lucas Bishop, another refugee from the future. They encounter the Phalanx, confront Callisto and the Morlocks, the other-dimensional Triumvirate, Mikhail Rasputin, Colossus’ reality-warping brother, and more. As of right now, this part is not collected in the omnibus format. For comprehension reasons, some story arcs are indicated with the hope of replacing those details with an Omnibus in the future.

The New Mutants has also recently ended, following several changes implemented by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza who took over for the final three issues. The duo continues their story in X-Force, introduced in New Mutants #100, with the following team: Boom-Boom, Cable, Cannonball, Domino, Feral, Shatterstar, Warpath, and Siryn. Naturally, other spin-offs and solo titles were also launched during this decade.

Sanctioned by the U.S. government to protect humans from mutants — and vice versa — they take on threats including Mister Sinister and his Nasty Boys, the Mutant Liberation Front and… the Incredible Hulk?! X-Men Reading Order

The New X-Men in the 2000s

For other editions, see our 2000s X-Men Reading Order Part 1 and Part 2. After the chaotic 90s, the X-Men entered a new era with Chris Claremont who came back to help put things in order. But this period is mostly defined by Grant Morrison’s run with his now classic New X-Men. The Scottish writer redefined the X-Men for the following decades.

But first, let’s make a trip to another Earth, Earth-1610, home of Miles Morales! This is the Ultimate Comics imprint, launched in 2000 by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Millar, the latter being on the X-Men.

A Revolution is ushered in the X-Men World with Chris Claremont’s return to the main series for a short time. Then, the writer and artist Salvador Larroca send an elite squad of X-Men led by Storm on a worldwide hunt in the new title X-Treme X-Men. Also, the solo adventures of Deadpool and Wolverine continue…
